The Vegas Golden Knights are a hockey team that plays in the National Hockey League, more commonly known as the NHL. The Vegas Golden Knights joined the NHL as the second newest team in 2016, but officially played their first year during the 2017-2018 season.
The NHL originated in 1917, meaning the Vegas Golden Knights joined the league a century after they were organized. In their first year of being an official hockey team they made it to the stanley cup finals, but lost to the Washington Capitals in game five. They won the first game of the series but lost the other four. In the 2023-2024 season the Vegas Golden Knights made it to the playoffs and played the Dallas Stars in the first round. The Golden Knights won the first two games which put them up 2-0 in the series. Then from there it went downhill as the Dallas stars tied the series up 2-2. But the Golden Knight didn’t give up and forced the series to seven games. Unfortunately for the Knights they lost in the seventh game, and the score was 1-2. A fun fact about the Golden knights is that they were the fastest team in NHL history to win a Stanley cup after officially joining the National Hockey League. They won the Stanley Cup after just six years of joining the NHL. If you’re wondering what the “Stanley Cup” is, no it’s not the water bottle that every teenager owns, it’s a trophy that a team gets after winning the title in the National Hockey League. Another fun fact about the Vegas Golden Knights is that although they have only been an organization for 3 years they have already retired the jersey number 58 from their team. They retired the jersey because it was a tribute to the shooting that happened in 2017, in Vegas. The shooting led to 58 people dead. Something weird about the Vegas Golden Knights is that you would think they’re mascot would be a knight, but no it’s actually a Gila Monster! The lovable but strange mascot’s name is Chance as it’s been with the team since they joined the NHL.
After the let down of the 2023-2024 season the Golden Knights went into the offseason with a chip on the shoulder. The owner and general manager Bill Foley and Kelly McCrimmon made big moves in the offseason. In the 2024-2025 NHL draft the Golden Knights drafted Trevor Connelly, a forward, as the 19th pick in the first round. In the second round of the draft the Golden Knights selected three players, one of them being Pavel Moysevich, a goalie, and the other two being Trent Swick, a forward, and Lucas Van Vliet, a forward. Then just a couple weeks before the 2024 season started the team signed Defenseman Viliam Kmec to a three year entry level contract. With the 2024-2025 season already starting on October 9th the Knights record is 11-5-2. The 2 stands for overtime loss, which basically means they have won 11 games and lost 7 games. The last regular season game for the Golden Knights is on April 16 of 2025, where they play the Vancouver Canucks.
For being one of the newest teams in the NHL they sure have solidified themselves as one of the most dominant teams in the NHL.
