As we approach the winter season, the BCHS bowling coach, Mr. Schulz, is ready to welcome the new season. Bowling can be a complicated and tricky sport, but Mr. Schulz encourages people to come out and try it. Mr. Schulz says, “I encourage everyone to bowl. It’s a lifetime sport. The more you bowl, the better you get, if you are willing to adjust.”
Bowling is a sport about being repetitive and accurate. If an excellent shot is made, the person will want to repeat it. Mr. Schulz says, “Find a consistent style that you are comfortable with. If you can throw the ball the same way each time, we can adjust your marks to improve your game.”
People may wonder why Mr. Schulz is going to be a bowling coach, well here’s the answer, “I bowled when I was in high school and 2 of my 3 kids bowled. I was coaching a fall sport and a spring sport, so my winter was available.” Mr. Schulz has the experience. Experience makes a coach even better because they understand the problems and difficulties.
When being on a bowling team, it is important to get along with each other. Bowling is a sport that includes teamwork. We asked Mr. Schulz his view on teamwork with bowling and he said, “Teamwork is important in that they get along during the match and root for each other to do well. We win matches with total pins, so everyone’s score matters.” Teamwork is an important aspect to remember when bowling.
Mr. Schulz and the team would like to build positive work habits and team building skills for the athletes. He says, “The overall goal is to build positive work habits and team building skills for the athletes. They need to learn good sportsmanship while still being competitive. I expect them to have a desire to win, but respect the game and their opponents.
The main accomplishments for the teams are to win state. We also want some individual state champions.” As the team is progressing through the year Mr. Schulz wants them to win but also wants them to be a positive team player.
If you are interested in trying out for the team, which he encourages, he welcomes people of all levels. If you want to learn to be an exceptional bowler you have to be coachable, “The main thing any athlete can do is be coachable. That is to be willing to listen and make adjustments, even when they feel strange. Bowling is something you can get good at just by bowling often. However, to get really good, you need to learn how to make adjustments and adopt a style that will allow you to improve.” . Mr. Schulz looks for players who are willing to make changes even if they don’t feel right at first.
If you are planning on trying out for the bowling team, having a positive attitude is one of the key concepts to being successful, “A positive attitude always helps in everything we do. When a bowler is on the approach, they need to be thinking about being successful. They can’t be worried about the bad ball they threw last frame. That’s over, move on, do what you’re supposed to do.” Having a positive attitude and keeping a positive mindset is another key to becoming a successful bowler and a successful athlete over all.
Other than just bowling Mr. Schulz has coached a variety of other sports. Mr. Schulz says, “I coached baseball for 18 years, football for 7, and softball for 4 years. I’ve coached bowling now for 17 years.” Mr. Schulz seems to have experience in many other sports other than bowling. He also has a lot of experience in bowling as he has coached for 17 years!
Mr. Schulz and the bowling team are going to strive for success in this upcoming season. The team and Mr. Schulz are going to soar towards the win. The BCHS bowling team should have an exceptional season this year. Remember, don’t be afraid to come out and try something new just like bowling, you never know if you possess the talent to be an upstanding bowler!
