As the first month of 2025 comes to a close, we’re reminded of all the things that have already happened this year. Between politics, sports, and natural disasters, it’s been incredibly eventful. Here’s a short recap of the beginning of what’s sure to be an exciting year.
TikTok Ban
What’s more appropriate to start with than what seems like the most predominant topic? On March 13th, 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives officially passed a legislation which would result in TikTok being banned if the owner’s refused to sell it. It had been a topic of worry for quite a while, so it passed with an overwhelming majority (325 votes to a measly 65). However, once the ban actually went into effect (January 18th of 2025), it was shortly restored once Trump stated that he would extend it’s services once he was inaugurated the following day. Currently, it’s ban is on a 75 day postponement, during which Trump will decide what’s to come of the popular app’s future.
Super Bowl
While the Super Bowl hasn’t happened yet, it’s already incredibly promising. It will be taking place on February 9, 2025, featuring Kendrick Lamar as the halftime performer. It was also announced that SZA will be joining him as a special guest. The game itself will broadcast the Eagles (who beat the Washington Commanders on January 26th, qualifying them) for a face-off against the Chiefs (who won against the Bills the same day).
Los Angeles Fires
A disastrous wildfire began in California on January 7, the Eaton Fire. Hence the name, it ignited in Eaton Canyon, and was escalated by the wind until it scorched over 14,000 acres of land. The origin is now being investigated, as the fire was finally stifled on January 31. It ran rampant for 24 days, becoming the second most devastating blaze in California’s history.
Trump’s Inauguration
Donald Trump officially became the 47th president of the United States during his inauguration on the 20th of January.
While we’re barely a month through 2025, the year is already promising to be eventful. Although it might’ve been a rough start, from natural disasters to app expulsions, it’s certainly going to be an interesting year.
