At Boulder City High School everyone experiences their lunch breaks in two separate periods. While this has become a routine schedule, some people believe that BCHS should switch to only one lunch period. I think we should keep having two separate lunch periods. The debate of schools changing to only one lunch period or multiple different lunches is ongoing and will be for a while, but in my opinion the advantages of having two lunch periods are clear and outweigh the reasons why we should only have one lunch for all students. Many CCSD high schools are switching to a single lunch period, even though some of these schools have more than 2000 students.
Junior, Hayden Nordstrom, who enjoys and appreciates our current lunch situation expresses, “I enjoy having two separate lunches for multiple reasons. I like having enough room to sit with my friends at lunch and it is not very crowded in the SAC. We should stay with two different lunch periods.”
Some of the main reasons I enjoy having two different lunch periods is because having two lunch periods reduces the crowding and noise in the SAC. When everyone is in the same room at once; for example the assemblies it is very crowded, chaotic, and loud. If we only had one lunch period, it would be very difficult to find a seat or have conversations with friends because it would be really loud. Having fewer students in each lunch period creates a less chaotic environment, the lines to get lunch are shorter, and seating is more accessible and convenient. With two separate lunch periods, everyone has enough space to sit and eat lunch. While also having a great time with their friends with little to no overcrowding. This helps create a more pleasant dining experience and makes it so much easier to enjoy lunch rather than going through chaos.
Another advantage of having two lunch periods is the improvement in food quality and availability. With the entire student body in the SAC, the ‘popular’ foods might run out quickly. That would eventually lead to people getting mad and major hostility in the SAC. Not only that but the students working in the snack shack and the students working with the lunch staff will be overworked. They would have to work twice as hard for twice as long as they’re used to.
In my opinion, having two separate lunch periods rather than having one lunch period for all students offers a lot of benefits. Reduced crowds and noise, better food quality and availability, more time to socialize and relax, and enhanced personal space all lead to a better overall lunch experience. A single lunch period may work for other schools, but the advantages of having two separate lunch periods works better for BCHS.
