The new requirements for 6th- 12th grade the Clark County School District is to wear lanyards with their ids on them while on school grounds at all times. For most schools that are a part of CCSD it’s necessary, but for Boulder City High School it’s not needed at all.
Boulder City High School is such a small school that everyone knows everyone. I could probably name most of the kids in this school. It also doesn’t give a chance for students to actually get to know their peers because if you have something that already introduced you before people know you it makes kids think they don’t actually have to get to know their peers. Not recognizing a student for themselves and by their lanyards could lead them to get dissociated from everything and feel not connected to their school.
According to the Clark County School District their reason for the lanyards are fairly simple,¨..to ensure that staff can identify all students.” As you can see it’s a good answer, for bigger schools that is, because with bigger schools there isn’t as much of a controlled environment so the staff might not know everyone in the school which could be easier to have grown adults and other people get on campus . The 2024 graduating class at BCHS had 155 students, not to mention less than 700 students attending the school. I believe some schools would need it if they had a larger population of students
I’ve asked some students that attend BCHS their opinions on the lanyards. According to Senior Abigail Francis she said ,”Personally I don’t mind them. I don’t think we need them because we are such a small school but I think they are fine. It does scratch my neck though .” As you can see through her opinion we have yet another student that doesn’t think they are necessary. Another student, Brayden Westergreen, junior, had another opinion on the lanyards, he said, “In my opinion the lanyards are silly. I think they’re kinda pointless to wear around your neck all day long. I get if you have to scan into classes or into school but not to wear them all day long, and get punished for not having it that day.” As you can see the lanyards are not putting a good name onto themselves by students.
Overall, the lanyards aren’t a good way to get to know a student and aren’t necessary for such a small school like BCHS.
