Ever since I could remember all CCSD students had a week off for Thanksgiving break. This would allow people to go out of town, spend time with family, and just have a break from all things school-related. But that all changed in the 2020-2021 school year when they switched the break to only 3 days. Although still a good amount of time off, this shortened break was noticed by everyone at CCSD, and not in a good way. Many students, like myself, prefer to have the week off from school. With the high school workload, days off are needed to make sure our mental, physical, and overall happiness stays intact. Many highschool students are very busy, whether it’s a job after school, sports, babysitting their siblings, schoolwork, and so much more. This Thanksgiving break would take away half of the students’ stress load.
Instead of being sleep-deprived, overworked and stressed, students would feel happy, well-rested, and actually have time to accomplish the things they want to do, as well as living their teenage life to the fullest.
When I asked students and staff their opinions on this week break I got many agreements. Seniors, Hannah Saso, Makayla Nelson, and Eden Gomez mentioned how they always go out of town for Thanksgiving to see family. Without having a week off they either have to miss two days of school or miss out on seeing their family. The girls also mentioned how if they don’t wanna be at school, why would the teachers want to be?
On the contrary, in the month of November, there is usually only one full week of school. Students are spoiled with three and four day weekends. This may sound nice to both students and staff, but our teachers are now having to push tests, and material they should be teaching. This leaves our students behind on the curriculum. With the amount of days we have off, family’s decide to take trips, thinking their students won’t be behind, but the opposite ends up happening. Students are behind, confused and left with their grades slipping. Although a long break would be nice, is it worth it to keep pushing learning back?
As a senior in highschool with a job and many extracurricular activities, I think we should have a week-long break. Students should be able to have a week off for Thanksgiving, especially since some travel to see their family or have family staying with them. Going back to having 5 days off, in my opinion, would be better for both the staff and the students.
