The long awaited film ” Wicked “ came out recently on November 22, 2024. Many fans are excited about this new movie, however many don’t know the very long history behind the Wicked Franchise. Here’s what you need to know!
Wicked first began in 1995 when author Winnie Holzman first wrote the book Wicked. Even though it was made as a book, the real life adaptation was changed to a musical. After the book was released, Holzman and Marc Platt spent around a year working on the story outline. Stephan Swatrtz wrote the music for the musical. After putting this all together Wicked the Musical took stage.
Wicked took stage for the first time on October 8, 2003. The musical Wicked is about two young women (Glinda and Elphaba) who meet at a school called Shiz University and become friends with many different twists and turns along the way. The first Broadway actors to play in Wicked were Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. When the Wicked musical came out people were not very excited. reviewer Ben Brantly, who worked with New York Times stated “I give it a year, that’s all that it will last.” However he was quickly proven wrong when Wicked completely took off! Wicked is now one of the most successful musicals on broadway.
Wicked is the prequel to the movie The Wizard Of Oz. Wicked explains the events before The Wizard Of Oz happened. The Wizard of Oz was released on August 25, 1939. This movie has also become one of the most loved and popular movies of all time. Frank Baum and Noel Langley wrote the movie. After writing the movie, Director Victor Flemmng directed it and hired the star actors Judy Garland, Jack Haley, Ray Bolger, and Bert Lahr to be in the movie.
All of these musicals and plays now lead to the new movie version of Wicked. The new Wicked movie stars actress’s Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, both of these actors are outstanding singers who played their parts wonderfully. While this is still a new movie many are loving it! Freshman Brooklyn Rose states “ I loved the movie and the Broadway play. I thought it was very fresh and new but also it kept the original idea.”
All of these different movies and musicals are some of the best and most remembered of all time. Wicked has evolved a lot over the years, but the feeling of the story has stayed the same. These different movies and musicals are all worth watching!
