In classrooms everywhere, seating charts are used. However, do they affect our classrooms in a positive way? Many teachers, kids, and parents have different views on this controversial question: can this really be affecting our learning?
In a recent article by ClassroomDirect.Co it states, “When you create a seating chart, some students will think that you’re picking favorites. It might create resentment and distrust. Since you want mutual respect in your classroom, this could be detrimental to the learning process.” When you introduce a seating chart, many kids will in turn be upset. This can cause kids not to pay attention or enjoy the class. Freshman Lyla Gunson states, “I think that free seating makes school a more enjoyable experience. Students should feel comfortable at school and be excited to go everyday.”
However, there is also plenty of evidence proving seating charts to be helpful. After a study was taken by BlogTeamsatchel.com the information states “Effective classroom management plays a huge role in this and includes class seating plans. How and where students are seated can have a positive impact on student behaviour, academic performance and class participation. .” While this can be true, sitting near people you know can encourage students to ask questions to each other and better understand information. Freshman Addison Welbourne states “ I think I learn even better when I have friends around me because we can explain our
questions to each other to understand better.” Asking teachers questions can be nerve wracking for students. Most just avoid saying anything at all, but this leaves students questioning. Having friends around you that can explain is a lot easier and less frightening.
While there is evidence for both sides of this argument, I believe that free seating can make school delightful and allow students to learn and understand problems on a deeper level. I think school should be a safe and pleasant place to learn and free seating can make school more of an exciting, and welcoming environment.
