As the colors of Boulder City High School’s navy blue and gold spin in the air and rifles fly, BCHS’ Winterguard brings together students with a passion for performance art. Whether on the football field, on the basketball court, or on the competition stage, Winterguard can be seen putting the work towards all of their routines.
Winterguard takes place indoors, and is an activity that consists of elements of dance, flag spinning, rifle tossing, and body coordination. The activity provides a unique opportunity for students all around campus to express themselves creatively and learn important skills such as teamwork, and boundless trust. Freshman Neveah Galindo, a member of the BCHS Winterguard, exclaims, “Winterguard has taught me how to be patient and how to work better with others. It has also taught me leadership skills and how to listen to other people’s opinions and try things differently.” Neveah also believes that Winterguard has created some of her best friendships, she comments: “I have met some of my best friends from Winterguard. I bond with them by hanging out with them, going to competitions, and practicing with them.”
Winterguard takes place during the first period every day, and on Mondays and Wednesdays the team comes to school during early bird hours to practice their routines. English and Publications teacher, Mrs. Strachan, is the one who puts in endless hours of work to make the choreography for the group. Learning the routines takes a lot of practice to perfect each toss and spin of the flags, and all of their hard work and hours of practice always shine through when they perform! The team competes in six competitions every season; upcoming dates are February 22, March 15, and March 29. Make sure to go and support your Eagles!
