As high schoolers begin to explore their academic options for their future, schools like Nevada State High School, NVLA, and CSN High School may seem appealing due to their college focused programs. However, before making the decision to leave BCHS, it’s important to consider what students might be giving up and the incredible opportunities they already have here on campus.
Boulder City High School offers the best of both worlds, a strong academic foundation while also having a true high school experience. Students who choose to stay at BCHS not only continue to receive a high-quality education, but also get to participate in the events and traditions that make high school memorable such as spirit weeks, homecoming week, all the dances, school assemblies, and more. These moments help build a sense of community and school pride that online or early college programs can’t replicate.
Academically, BCHS is more competitive than ever. Our school offers an impressive selection of Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement (AP) courses that allow students to challenge themselves and earn college credit while still in high school.
These college-level classes allow students to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously. Currently, Boulder City High School offers:
- English 101 & 102
- Math 126 & 127
- Communications 101 & 102
- Music 121 & 134
- U.S. History 101 & 102
Beginning next school year, Psychology 101 and Sociology 101 will also be available as dual enrollment courses, providing even more opportunities for students interested in social science credits for both high school and college credit.
Our AP program provides challenging but rewarding, college-level coursework and the chance to earn college credit based on AP exam scores. BCHS currently offers:
- AP Language and Composition
- AP Literature and Composition
- AP Calculus
- AP Statistics
- AP World History
- AP Computer Science
- AP Chemistry
We also have many other AP and Dual Enrollment courses available online, giving students greater flexibility in how their schedules are structured.
For students interested in hands-on learning and career preparation, BCHS also provides several Career and Technical Education pathways:
- Four levels of Automotive Technology
- Theater Technology
- Cybersecurity
- Employee Skills Training Program
These programs help students build real world skills and explore potential career paths before they graduate. When speaking to Mrs. Gomez, to help clarify the difference between AP and Dual Enrollment courses. She explained: “With respect to English, here are two fundamental differences between AP Lang/Lit and Dual Credit courses. In order to earn an English credit for college, a student needs to take AP English junior and senior year, AND pass the AP exam each year. In contrast, a student can take one year of dual credit, which is comprised of English 101 and 102, and earn the same credit for college, with no test required. Both options are good ones. AP English courses focus on analysis of texts and strengthening critical thinking and writing skills. Dual credit courses focus more on a survey of reading material and writing assignments. We are fortunate to be able to offer both at BCHS.”
While alternative high school options may offer academic advantages, they often lack the traditional high school experiences that many students cherish. At Boulder City High School, students don’t have to choose between academic excellence and personal connection; they can have both. From high-level academics to a strong sense of school spirit and belonging, BCHS continues to be a place where students grow, thrive, and prepare for their future, without missing out on the moments that make high school unforgettable.
